Cinnamomum cassia in Neuro Serge

What is it?

Cinnamomum cassia, commonly called cassia cinnamon, is the more widely sold of the two main cinnamon species (the other being Ceylon cinnamon, Cinnamomum verum). Compounds of interest include cinnamaldehyde, eugenol, and cinnamic acid.

What's been studied?

  • Study type: Systematic review of 40 studies (screened from over 2,600 candidates)
  • Breakdown: 33 animal studies, 5 in-vitro studies, 2 clinical studies (neither measured cognitive outcomes)
  • Finding: Reviewers reported "0 clinical trials in humans looking at effects on cognitive function or cognitive decline." Preclinical work suggests cinnamaldehyde may inhibit amyloid-beta plaque buildup, a mechanism relevant to Alzheimer's disease — but this has not been confirmed in humans, nor is it known whether cinnamon compounds reach the brain in meaningful amounts from oral use.

A safety note

Cassia-type cinnamon contains coumarin, a naturally occurring compound that regulatory bodies recommend limiting in daily intake due to potential liver effects at high doses. Anyone consuming cassia cinnamon from multiple sources (food plus supplements) should be mindful of total intake. Ceylon cinnamon contains substantially less coumarin, but Neuro Serge's product materials specify Cinnamomum cassia, not Ceylon cinnamon.

What this means for Neuro Serge

Cinnamon's inclusion rests entirely on animal and lab research plus a plausible mechanism — not on any human trial demonstrating a cognitive effect.

What it does NOT prove

It does not prove cinnamon improves memory, focus, or any cognitive measure in humans. This is, by the reviewers' own account, an evidence gap — not a minor caveat.
