Bilberry extract in Neuro Serge
What is it?
Bilberry extract is derived from Vaccinium myrtillus, a European relative of the blueberry, and is typically standardized for anthocyanins — the pigments responsible for its dark color and much of its antioxidant activity.
What's been studied?
Bilberry's research base for cognition is meaningfully thinner than the other polyphenol ingredients in this formula:
- Laboratory research: Bilberry compounds have shown activity against enzymes relevant to mood and cognition (including AChE and MAO-A) in in-vitro studies.
- Animal research: Bilberry anthocyanins have improved learning and memory measures in mouse models of cognitive decline.
- Human research: Direct human trials measuring cognitive outcomes from bilberry specifically are small, few, and largely pilot-stage — a notably weaker evidence base than olive leaf, green tea, or grape seed.
What this means for Neuro Serge
Bilberry's inclusion is biologically plausible given its antioxidant profile and the animal/lab data, but it currently has the second-weakest direct human cognitive evidence of the six named ingredients (after DGL).
What it does NOT prove
Enzyme inhibition in a test tube or improved maze performance in mice does not establish that bilberry — at whatever dose is in Neuro Serge — will produce a noticeable cognitive effect in an adult human.
