Antioxidants and brain health: what research actually shows
The theory
Oxidative stress — an imbalance between reactive molecules (free radicals) and the body's ability to neutralize them — is studied as one of several processes implicated in cellular aging, including in brain cells. Antioxidant compounds, including polyphenols found in olive leaf, green tea, grape seed, and bilberry, are studied for their ability to help neutralize oxidative damage in laboratory settings.
The important caveat almost no supplement site mentions
The NIH's National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health directly reviewed antioxidant supplement research and concluded there is currently "no evidence that antioxidant supplements have a positive impact" on most of the chronic disease outcomes studied — including cancer, cardiovascular disease, and cataracts. The one notable exception was a specific supplement combination shown to modestly slow progression in people already diagnosed with age-related macular degeneration. Source: NCCIH, NIH
Why lab antioxidant activity doesn't guarantee a felt effect
The NCCIH review offers several possible explanations for why whole foods rich in antioxidants are associated with lower disease risk while isolated antioxidant supplements generally are not: other compounds in whole foods may contribute to the benefit, purified/concentrated antioxidants may behave differently than food-based ones, and typical supplement doses can be far higher than dietary amounts — sometimes with their own risks (for example, high-dose beta-carotene has been linked to increased lung cancer risk in smokers).
What this means for reading supplement marketing
"Antioxidant" is a mechanism description, not a proven health outcome. When a product (including Neuro Serge) lists antioxidant-rich ingredients, that tells you about a plausible biological mechanism studied in cells or animals — not a demonstrated effect on memory, focus, or any other outcome in humans taking that specific product.
Where this applies to Neuro Serge specifically
Several Neuro Serge ingredients are framed around antioxidant activity. See our ingredient breakdown for what human research — beyond general antioxidant theory — actually exists for each one.
